JOST "REX A" STIRLING ENGINE FAN
Ca. 1910

First marketed around 1903 and produced for almost two decades, this very unusual design floor-standing fan made by Carl Jost uses a Stirling hot air engine to power the blades. A kerosene lamp mounted at the lower part of the elegantly decorated tripod base generates heat to drive the motor, which turnss the 20" diameter fan blades at a steady and surprisingly effective rate. Needless to say, it is an incongruous concept, using heat to generate cool air, but it was used very effectively in areas that lacked access to electricity.
